Apathy, it's not a choice, it's a lifestyle!
I am a bad nerd.  A horrible horrible nerd, because there is so much of the world of television, movies and comics that I just don’t care about and because of the worlds I run in I feel like I should, but I just don’t care.

I don't care about LOST.

The same can be said for the following “beloved” television programs.  Battlestar Galactica, Firefly, Babylon 5, New Doctor Who, Torchwood, Stargate, etc.

I don’t care about HEROES either.  I did… for a second.  I saw the last few episodes of Season One after peer pressure and tortured myself through Season 2 and even bought the trade paperback of the first volume of comics, but Season 3 I really just don’t give a damn.  At all.  This is so wrong of me as a card carrying nerd, but I just don’t care.

I don’t care about anything that appears on the Sci-Fi Channel… not even ECW anymore.  I don’t care what happens to whoever, whenever, wherever.  I also HATED Fringe.  That show sucks.

I haven’t seen THE DARK KNIGHT yet.  Guess what?  I don’t care.  Nope, not one bit.  I haven't seen HELLBOY 2 either. I also didn't see X-Files, Wall-E, Wanted or whatever else was this summer. I don't care, don't miss them. I did see Indy and Hancock... I didn't care that I did.

I also don’t own an Xbox 360.  I might never own an Xbox 360 or a PS3.  I still play my Dreamcast.  Okay, yes, that’s pretty damn nerdy and I shouldn’t care about the fact that I own a Dreamcast, but I do care about that.  That is a very special thing to me.  What I don't care about is that I barely ever play it. I am a very lax game player. I'll play for days on end and then not touch a game for months. I just don't care.

I also don't care about Magic: The Gathering, I don't watch Anime or Manga, I might read lots of comics but if tomorrow I had to stop, I wouldn't cry.

After spending so many years to have a brain full of trivia, to know all this pointless pop-culture knowledge, the main thing I can accept is...

I don't care... and neither should you.

That's my main point... don't care. Just enjoy. Read, watch, play, but never, ever care. It's just not important. Not in the end. Maybe you think it is. Maybe you think I should care. You are wrong. That's all. Don't care!

(written for [info]therealljidol, not that I really care...)

Yay! Except for LOST, I don't care about any of that stuff either!

But WHY don't you care about these things is a question you might want to address.

It's pretty simple actually... I tend to not care about the "mainstream"... but it's also an evolution of me as a person. I just am not caring much anymore.

I still enjoy it all.. wrestling, comics, etc... and will discuss it. My caring though has dropped... there's more important things to care about. Like my own creations!

While I do love LOST, I had to say OMG three times when you said you still play a Dreamcast!!!! I had one many moons ago and mine died a horrible painful death about 4 years ago and I can't find another one like it. I even used it to get online and play Virtua Fighter and this other game that I can not remember the name of for the life of me right now. I don't like Heroes either. I think it is a stupid show. I don't watch much TV at all. Just LOST and Survivor (does that make me a bigger nerd then you??)

No... I think I am a bigger nerd than everyone...
because I don't care about any of this stuff and yet I know what it all is. That's just nerdy!

I hope my Dreamcast never dies...

Shenmue 1... Shenmue 1... Shenmue 1!

In the greater scheme of things I don't care either. Except for the New Doctor. Just a tiny bit.

So... Chris or David?

Heh, I'm in the same boat. We don't have the antenna hooked to the tv, nor do we even have basic cable so while I could download shows I just don't care enough to do so. I'd rather do other nerdy things, like gaming. ;)

Well, I actually have Cable... and um... I do game though. Not table top though or LARP. I'd do table top again if I had enough fellow gaming friends.

My friends are nerdy, but about music, comics, graffiti.

I'm not even allowed to discuss video games with one friend of mine because he has an addicition. I meant a video game addiction... and he's trying to stay sober.

I don't really care that much though...if I miss something. I miss it. But I do care about nerd stuff...

My thing is books, music, and gaming. I'd be more into movies if I had the money though. :)

Any time we have the TV we find ourselves getting sucked into the black hole of scheduling our time around it. I think I like it better when we're free. :D

I actually care about a lot of that stuff.

But I care about most things so that shouldn't be surprising.

I'm not good with apathy. I emotionally invest in almost everything.

My geek card went platinum a few years ago, and I admit that I watch several shows for enjoyment... however, I DVR them and watch at my leisure, when the mood strikes me... otherwise, I can't be bothered. The only real passion I show is for our 'old fashioned' pen and paper RPGs... I do attend DragonCon but was surprised at myself this past Con when I couldn't attend and I wasn't really 'upset'... a bit bummed, but not the life altering sadness I thought it would turn out to be... Perhaps I am in my own Geek Evolution.

Great post!

I don't care about most of that stuff either. I'm just now watching Babylon 5 and that's because my husband wanted to watch it. I would have been just as happy without having watched it. I really enjoyed Season 1 of Heroes, but haven't gotten around to watching Season 2, which means watching Season 3 is pointless.

But then, I'm not so much a geek as I am geek-by-proxy because of my husband and my SO, who are both so geeky it's sometimes scary. ;)

Geeks are sexy and scary... that's what makes us awesome. Geek by proxy. Do you mind that you became one?

Does this mean if not for them, you'd have no geek proximity?

You are NOT a bad nerd - you are in fact a bad GEEK.
I took a quiz - I thought I was a geek but then discovered the difference.
Try it for yourself...http://www.helloquizzy.com/tests/the-nerd-geek-or-dork-test

So, don't be ashamed, proudly flaunt your nerdism!

(And most of that pop culture stuff doesn't do it for me either. I have never watched Lost, or Heroes, haven't seen either of the new Batman's and have to fight not to roll my eyes when me coworkers get all passionate over the New Who.)

I TRIED to care about Magic: The Gathering, but I couldn't. I was dating a guy who, at the time, was incredibly interested in it, so I tried. But I just could not.

Although, I love my XBox360 :)

I wouldn't play anything that reminded me of Magic: The Gathering though.

You made me laugh. I'm one of the few people amongst my group of friends that doesn't follow SF religiously. Sure, I'll watch it with them, sometimes even seek it out, but do I like it enough to join fan communities or read fan fic about it? No. (I must confess, though, to being a member of the Penn State Monty Python Society back in the day.)

I refuse to acknowledge LOST whatsoever. Can everybody quit gushing at me over it, please?

I don't agree with not caring, I just don't think you should care just because it's a geek show, and you're meant to. Because... well, that to me just undermines the whole point of geekism. We're not supposed to follow the world's trends, that's why we're geeks.
And you're not supposed to not care and not follow the worlds trends just because you're a geek, either.

....um.

There's not a whole lot of point in caring about something just 'cause everyone else does.

I care about the things I like, and maybe sometimes make an attempt at trying to like things that other people do, just to see why they like them in case they have some merit. But that only goes so far.
